Art Against Forgetting: Paintings by Leonard Meiselman

Published in 2002

Meiselman's expressionist paintings depict prayer shawls and flags that appear to have been shredded by catastrophic events. As he paints, the awful events of the past century - most notably the Holocaust - still resonate even as new terrors daily confront Jews the world over. These works, among them "Flag from Ground Zero", are not only powerfully painted, but the prayer shawl (tallit) and American flag become symbols that seem more poignantly human and expressive than any human figures. The artist gives voice to our horror and anger at man's inhumanity to man.
