It’s fitting that the Max Stern Collection of Ceremonial art should be the subject of the first on-line catalogue published by Yeshiva University Museum. This major gift to YUM by the late Chairman of the University Board of Trustees, is the largest single gift we have ever received, comprising some 400 pieces.
During his lifetime, Mr. Stern spent many enjoyable hours acquiring and assembling these Judaica pieces—they were the most cherished ornaments in his lavishly appointed apartment on the Upper West Side, which he and his wife Ghity treasured primarily because they regarded them as “Sherit Hapletah”, post Holocaust remains of Jewish religious life and culture that they were privileged to be able to preserve.
